We use phrases like "trust your gut," "butterflies in my stomach," or "gut-wrenching" all the time. But have you ever stopped to think about why we connect our stomachs to our emotions so deeply?
It turns out, these aren't just metaphors. They are biological realities!
On this Mindful Monday, I want to introduce you to one of the most fascinating connections in the human body: The Gut-Brain Axis. If you’ve been feeling irritable, foggy, or just "off" lately, the answer might not be in your head—it might be on your plate and in your tummy.
Meeting Your "Second Brain"
Scientists often refer to the gut as the "Second Brain." Why? Because your digestive tract is lined with over 100 million nerve cells. In fact, your gut produces about 95% of your body's serotonin—the key hormone that stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness.
Think about that for a second: 95% of your "happy hormone" comes from your belly, not your brain.
This means the communication is a two-way street. When your brain is stressed, your digestion slows down (hello, stomach knots!). But the reverse is also true: if your digestion is sluggish or inflamed, it sends distress signals up to your brain, leading to brain fog, anxiety, and irritability.
The Art of "Rest and Digest"
In our fast-paced culture, we often eat on the run. We eat while driving, while standing at the kitchen counter, or while scrolling through stressful emails.
When we do this, our bodies remain in "Fight or Flight" mode (high stress). But for optimal digestion—and optimal mood—we need to be in "Rest and Digest" mode. We need to signal to our bodies that we are safe, so they can prioritize breaking down nutrients and producing those happy hormones.
The Solution: Setting the Table with Scent
So, how do we flip the switch from stress to digestion? We use the power of aroma.
Our sense of smell is a direct shortcut to the brain. By diffusing specific oils during mealtime, we can create a sensory cue that tells the body, "It is time to slow down. It is time to nourish."
The Power Players:
-
Peppermint: This is the classic digestive support. Its bright, cool aroma is incredibly refreshing. Diffusing Peppermint can help wake up the senses and settle the stomach before you even take the first bite.
-
KidScents® TummyGize™: Don't let the name fool you—this isn't just for kids! It’s a gentle, pre-diluted blend of Spearmint, Peppermint, Tangerine, Fennel, and Ginger. It has a softer, sweeter aroma than straight Peppermint, making it perfect for a calming family dinner atmosphere.
A Simple Mindful Ritual
Tonight, I challenge you to try a simple experiment.
-
Turn off the TV and put away the phones.
-
Fill your diffuser with water and add 5 drops of Peppermint or TummyGize.
-
Sit down together. Take three deep breaths of that fresh aroma before you start eating.
Notice how the atmosphere shifts. Notice how your belly feels after the meal. By supporting your gut, you are nurturing your mind.
Trust your gut—it knows what you need.
